Science vs Lore (1/2)NOTE: A lot of complaints on two issues that I want to address: 1. Big Bang "The universe began with a giant explosion." First, this was not MY wording, it is from the NSF S&E survey of literacy, so there is nothing I can do to change it. "Explosion" was possibly used because "expansion" was tested to have a very low word recognition. "Explosion" can mean any sudden increase in volume or release of energy, or it can be narrowed to refer to only chemical reactions. The Big Bang can be called an explosion in the broad sense of a rapid expansion. 2. Witches. Again, not my wording. Wicca is a religion/cult belief/tradition. Witches are magical beings who have mystical powers. Perhaps some people got the two mixed up, but I think the results are still fairly in line with belief in magical powers. Muslim, and many Christian groups strongly advocate a belief in the active demonic agency of witches. Note that witches are at the bottom of a long li st of paranormal beliefs. Despite great strides in our understanding, the average person still does not understand science in the facts or in the practice, and instead fills the void with pseudoscience. This reflects a worldview that values an emphasis on commonly accepted, traditional lore, and a general disinterest in the role of science and reason in our lives. Terror suspect Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ashan Nafis remains behind bars accused of plotting to bomb the Federal Reserve Branch in Manhattan. But in a new development the FBI has arrested andsearched the San Diego apartment of 36-year-old Howard Willie Carter II .Carter and Nafis are linked in criminal complaints on both coasts that say they communicated on Facebook and discussed targets. Carter is an ex-con with a lengthy criminal history who is also knows as "Yaqeen."
The feds have not commented on any link but there are connections between the two drawn in the New York complaint and a search warrant for Carter's apartment.Carter pleaded not guilty to child pornography charges in court in San Diego. The charges arise from a computer the FBI found in a trash bin outside Carter's apartment when they had him under surveillance this summer. He was ordered held without bond pending a hearing next week. So far he has not been the subject of any terrorism charges.
Nafis was arrested Wednesday after he tried to detonate a 1,000-pound bomb in a van he parked next to the Federal Reserve bank in Lower Manhattan, with a cell phone rigged as a detonator according to the criminal complaint.
Nafis arrived in the United States in January on a valid student visa and attended a college in Missouri before coming here and enrolling in the ASA Institute of Business and Computer Technology in Midtown Manhattan. Back in Missouri friends are shocke d he's been arrested on terror charges.
A friend in Missouri told reporters, "He's not an evil person. I don't know what to say, I'm just stunned."
Nafis worked with an undercover informant to build the bomb and tried to detonate it at the federal reserve according to the criminal complaint.
The police commissioner says Nafis arrest was not the result of entrapment.

To enhance commerce.~ Open Door Policy As a specific policy with regard to China, it was first advanced by the United States in the Open Door Notes of September-November 1899. In 1898, the United States had become an East Asian power through the acquisition of the Philippine Islands, and when the partition of China by the European powers and Japan seemed imminent, the United States felt its commercial interests in China threatened. U.S. Secretary of State John Hay sent notes to the major powers (France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, and Russia), asking them to declare formally that they would uphold Chinese territorial and administrative integrity and would not interfere with the free use of the treaty ports within their spheres of influence in China. The open door policy stated that all European nations, and the United States, could trade with China. In reply, each nation evaded Hay's request, taking the position that it could not commit itself until the other nations had complied. During this period there was a strong economic tension. However, by July 1900, Hay announced that each of the powers had granted consent in principle. Although treaties made after 1900 refer to the Open Door Policy, competition among the various powers for special concessions within China for railroad rights, mining rights, loans, foreign trade ports, and so forth, continued unabated. Technically, the term "Open Door Policy" can be only referred to as before the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. Regarding China's international trade policy introduced after Deng Xiaoping took office, it is termed as China's policy of opening up to the outside world.~~
