Biden To Ryan: Show Me You Care! - Washington Times [ournewsa.blogspot.com]
Roses in DecemberOn December 2, 1980 lay missioner Jean Donovan and three American nuns were brutally murdered by members of El Salvador's security force. This "sensitive, marvelously constructed film" (Catholic New York) chronicles Jean's life, from her affluent childhood in Connecticut, to her decision to volunteer with the Maryknolls in El Salvador, to her tragic death. An award-winning classic for the ages, Roses in December is both an eloquent memorial to the commitment of this courageous young woman and a powerful indictment of US foreign policy in Central America.
YAKIMA, Washington, October 13, 2012 â" âShow me you careâ was the most memorable line spoken in the vice-presidential candidates debate moderated by Martha Raddatz last Thursday night.Â
It was spoken by Vice President Joe Biden and aimed squarely at Mitt Romneyâs campaign running mate, Paul Ryan.Â
The topic of the debate started with foreign policy and Ryan explaining how he (and the Romney ticket) viewed the Benghazi tragedy as a foreign policy failure. How it was a failure of intelligence and of the Obama administrationâs approach to the Middle East.
Ryan claimed what the world is witnessing is the âunraveling of the Obama foreign policy program.â
In regards to Obamaâs Middle-East problem, Ryan took issue with the fact that Joe Biden couldnât get a settlement with Afghanistan on military troop reduction, the Obama administration is allowing Iran to get nuclear weapons, and that President Obama is allowing âdaylightâ between the United States and Israel.
When Ryan criticized President Obama for not having adequate security at Benghazi, Joe Biden delivered his first of many zingers when he pointed out that Ryanâs last two budget proposals recommended material cuts in embassy security budgets around the world.
When Ryan suggested that the United States stand up to China trade practices and get tougher on Russia, Biden said it would be a mistake to isolate Russia and China by being hostile towards them.
Ryanâs full-blown attack on the administrationâs foreign policy showed a lack of understanding and knowledge of international cooperation by the Republican team.Â
Because of the Romney-Ryan approach to foreign policy, one gets the feeling that they would have the United States in another Middle-Eastern war, anger China, and frustrate Russia.Â
Getting tough limits diplomatic options and can quickly lead to a war. Americans donât want another war.
With regards to domestic issues, Biden explained when Obama took over as President there had been 9 million jobs lost, people were being thrown out of their homes, the American auto industry was about to fold and another million people added to the unemployed. Plus, mortgage and banks were near collapse, some already had collapsed.Â
Since Obama took office, the auto industry has recovered, a 150,000 jobs a month have been added, banking has been saved and strengthened, and home-owners are beginning to feel relief. He admitted to Ryan that the recovery has been slow but the Republicans in Congress have been of little help because they are tied to âThe Pledgeâ of Grover Norquist and his group.Â
In another memorable moment of the debate, reminiscent of Lee Iacoccaâs (a former CEO of Chrysler Motors) battle cry, âLead, follow or get out of the way,â Biden suggested that for people so down on America should get out of the way and let us do the job that needs to be done.Â
It isnât that Romney and Ryan are down on America, itâs because they are always pointing out whatâs wrong with America but, yet, are on short on specifics about how they would fix America. They want to cut taxes and reduce the deficit, but on the backs of the middle-class; they want to correct Medicare but on the backs of the very people who receive it; and, they want a robust defense budget but have no way to pay for it.Â
The Republicans financed the last two wars in the Middle East, by borrowing instead of having it in the budget.  They wrote bad checks and now they would have us believe it is for the middle-class and retired elderly to pay for it.  Why doesnât that include the wealthy? Why canât the Republicans see that the wealthy can both create jobs and help pay down the national debt?Â
Another interesting zinger thrown at Ryan was when he faulted President Obama for his stimulus package failure; a package Ryan, and the Republicans, claim did little to help provide jobs. It was then that Biden revealed that Ryan as a Congressman wrote a letter to Biden asking for millions of dollars of stimulus money for his district. Biden quipped, âSure, write me a letter anytime, Iâll entertain it.â It was an amazing few moments in an otherwise meaningless debate.Â
And here is the mystery of the Republican Party and those that lead it, namely Romney and Ryan:Â They stand for less government in our daily lives, less government regulation on businesses in order for business to be more success and to create jobs, yet, they want to use government to intrude in our daily lives and regulate our behavior towards personal and religious pursuits.Â
They want to outlaw gay marriage and do away with a womanâs right to make decisions for her own body. Ryan very clearly stated he canât separate his faith from his politics, while Biden stated that he accepts the churchâs positions but he doesnât feel he should impose those beliefs on others.Â
The Republican position according to Paul Ryan:
1) Donât ask the wealthy to pay their fair share;
2) less government regulation on businesses;
3) Impose Christian Right religious views on everyone;
4) make the world safer by pissing-off trading partners.Â
Ryan, you guys are hard to understand.Â
