Fund-raising
President Barack Obama and allied Democratic Party committees raised $ 181 million in September, the largest monthly total in his re-election effort.
Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has yet to announce his September fund-raising totals in advance of the Oct. 20 deadline.
TV ads
A significant gap in the swing states
President Barack Obama's re-election campaign has run more than twice as many TV ads in swing states as has the campaign of his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney.
The Nielsen Co. said last week that Obama's campaign had run nearly 230,000 ads in nine battleground states from the beginning of the year through early September, compared with about 87,000 for Romney.
The biggest disparity was in Ohio.
Second debate
DNC chair: 'He'll come out strong'
The chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee said she expects President Barack Obama to actively challenge Republican opponent Mitt Romney when the two presidential candidates meet for their second debate.
"He'll come out strong, and we'll see a spirited discussion," U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, the national party chairwoman, said during a TV interview.
Obama and Romney are next scheduled to meet Oct. 16 in Hempstead, N.Y. A CBS News poll taken immediately after the Denver debate found 46% of 523 undecided voters saying Romney won the debate and 22% saying Obama did. The margin of error was plus or minus 4 percentage points.
Early voting
Rule on early voting in Ohio restored
A federal appeals court reinstated in-person early voting in the swing state of Ohio on the final three days before Election Day, returning discretion to local boards of elections.
The ruling Friday by the three-judge panel of the 6th U.S. Court of Appeals in Cincinnati came in a case that targeted a state law that ends early voting for most residents on the Friday evening before a Tuesday election. The law makes an exception for military personnel and Ohio voters living overseas.
President Barack Obama's campaign and Democrats sued Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted and Attorney General Mike DeWine, both Republicans, over the legality of the law. They argued that everyone should have a chance to vote on those days.
Ohio is among 34 states, in addition to the District of Columbia, where people can vote early without giving any reason.
