A federal appeals court panel ruled Friday that Ohio counties can keep polls open for in-person early voting the three days before the election, delivering a win to the Obama campaign after months of legal wrangling over the battleground state̢剢s election rules.
The campaign had gone to court to challenge a state law that for most voters would have ended early voting the final weekend before the election, one of a slew of restrictions instituted by the GOP-dominated Ohio legislature last year in what critics said was an effort to tamp down turnout by the minority voters who typically make greater use of early voting.
With the ruling, almost all of those restrictions have now been reversed, either by the courts or by the legislature itself, which repealed many of the restrictions after opponents gathered enough signatures to put them to a referendum. The rules in place in Ohio will now be largely the same as those in 2008.
The apeals court ruled that the Ohio law, which allowed uniformed members of the military and Americans overseas to vote early on those days but not other Ohio voters, was unconstitutional because it privileged some voters over others.
âÂÅ"The hard work to protect AmericansâÂ⢠right to vote has paid off,â said the Obama campaignâÂâ¢s general counsel, Bob Bauer, in a statement. âÂÅ"We are now focused on making sure that voters across the country fully understand their rights, know exactly what their voting laws require of them, and clarify when they can cast their ballot.âÂÂ
Ohio was one of many states that tightened their election rules to restrict early voting or impose photo identification mandates after the 2008 election. Courts have overturned many of those rules, finding in some cases that photo ID requirements had a discriminatory impact on minority voters who are less likely to have the required documents.
Early voting began in Ohio on Tuesday.
Alan Wirzbicki can be reached at awirzbicki@globe.com.Question by BioMajor: What do people mean when they say the "old country"? I used to hear people say it a lot, and now more so in movies. It seems like I always hear it from immigrants? Or people from foreign nations? There's always some comment like "Back in the old country" or I hear older people say "When my mother came here from the old country..." For awhile I thought I knew what that meant but now I'm not sure I do... So I'm just simple wondering, Where or what is "the old country?" Best answer for What do people mean when they say the "old country"?:
Answer by cheesebrady
it's the country they lived in before they lived wherever they are now. like saying "at my old house the walls were blue." get it?
Answer by Winter L
"The old country" is where the persons ancestory originated from. For instance, if you are speaking to someone who came to America from Ireland, then they would be speaking of Ireland when saying "Back in the old country..." It is relative to the person's backround.

Unless you are a Native American Indian and were already here. All others from other nations "migrated" here, or were sent here for slavery or servitude or invasion. The "old country" is the land you or your former relatives "immigrated" from. Knowing and understanding your heritage is important to you and your future family for your race, medical, and religious background. Good luck. <}:-})

The old country is the place of origin that migrant families came from, the new country is the country in which they are living and have an affinity to now! For example one of my great aunts use to refer to the Basque country in Spain as the old country when she refer to the family or some anecdote...and I noticed my dad says the same thing when his referring to his country of birth which is Uruguay. I've even heard people that are 10th generation born here refer to England or Ireland as the old country. For many years migrants in Australia were and are still referred to as New Australians when they arrived into the new country(Australia) which is way nicer way than to refer to them as you put it so badly ..people of foreign nations! I simply hope now you understand by what that phrase means.?
