HANDLE YOUR BALLS! (9.11.12 - Day 1230)

GOP tax cut logic

By using Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s logic about borrowing from China, aren’t we borrowing from China right now to compensate for the George W. Bush tax cuts? These are the same tax cuts that neither Romney nor the GOP will discuss giving up even a slight part of for the benefit of all Americans. To quote George Orwell’s “Animal Farm,” “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”Verne Christensen OlatheRomney bad for U.S.Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, a serial prevaricator, gave America a truthful look at the contempt that the wealthy in general, and national Republicans in particular, have for the average American. They repeatedly use little people for their votes and then go about serving the wealthy and the powerful. The people at that fundraiser paid $ 50,000 a plate to be there. It is obscenely hypocritical for Romney an d his ilk to talk about “entitlement reform” when so many of our wealthy feel completely entitled to pay a perpetually decreasing share of income taxes. They view average folks who vote GOP as useful idiots and nothing more. The billionaire Koch brothers are spending millions of dollars to get Romney elected. They are not crazy. With the Romney-Paul Ryan tax plan, they would save hundreds of times that much while the U.S. Treasury, the middle class and, disproportionately, the poor, can go straight to hell. Jeff GarnerGladstoneObama’s big mysteryMore letters about Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s tax returns? This is really old news.An interesting question is about President Barack Obama’s sealed college and travel records while he was a student. Before he ran for president, it had been reported that a lot of money was spent to seal those records.Who paid the money and, ev en more intriguing, why? According to the Obamas’ financial records, at that time they didn’t have the money. Was he really there on campus?I think an interesting challenge from Romney to Obama would be: I’ll release my tax records if you’ll unseal and reveal your college and travel records. Then these mysteries of both men would be solved.Roberta NewthLeawoodRomney aids ObamaTo make the case for President Barack Obama in the coming election, one just has to refer to Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s speeches and commentaries. The case for Obama is made by Mitt.John ChapmanGladstone47 percenters in U.S.There are hazards to speaking in code. The 47 percent brouhaha is the result of making a point encoded to use politically correct words. That point was not lost on the target group but raises h ackles when exposed to a greater audience. If only Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney could have said what he meant, he could have made it clear that he did not mean his good guys making a living from government coffers.Romney meant the other side’s bad guys. And though I can’t say it, you know who they are. Certainly no divisiveness was intended. That would only leave a simple math problem, because you can’t get to the 47 percent without both groups. Businessmen hire accountants to do that kind of math stuff.Bob HishawKansas CityMass transportation bustA recent article in the Lawrence Journal-World said the Johnson County Transit Authority was seeking help to offset the cost of the JO running between the University of Kansas Edwards Campus and the Lawrence campus of KU. In essence, the Lawrence people are saying, “No way are we going to contribute to Johnson County.”The arti cle claims that the JO between those campus locations costs Johnson County taxpayers some $ 840,000 a year to provide 150,000 passenger trips riders the entire year. Is this insanity or what?Do our Johnson County commissioners actually condone such a waste of taxpayer money? I suspect this is only the tip of the iceberg. When was the last time anyone saw a JO anywhere with more than two riders?I live just off of Kansas 10 and sometimes see those buses going to and from Lawrence with zero passengers. If we really believe that we should supply transportation for KU, why not buy a couple of Ford Fusion hybrids with signs on the sides and backs saying: “Johnson County Mini-JO. Your tax dollars at work. Saving you a lot of money each year.”Warren KoellerOlatheSad in Mission HillsI have owned my Mission Hills home for more than 38 years, raised three lovely daughters there and have done my best to contribute to my community. I am a registered Republican who happens to support the mission and vision of President Barack Obama. So I decided to put an Obama campaign sign in my front yard. Imagine my dismay when I received a letter telling me to “please remove your Obama sign” and that I am “an embarrassment to our neighborhood.”The letter was signed, of course, “Anonymous” (the nom de plume of cowards) and contained a copy of an email from a “friend” who was denied health coverage because of Obama’s “death panels.” A 30-second search on Google revealed that the anecdote described in the email was fabricated and had been widely distributed for years. How sad that people feel they need to make up lies to try to prove a political point. How sad that this experience reflects our current political discourse. How sad that my neighbor is embarrassed by my expression of support for the president. How sad.Ellen BradburyMission HillsWhat’s American?Letters in The Star suggest that we should buy cars made in the U.S. I strongly agree. But, you must realize many of the cars that have the most American content have foreign names on them. Many of the cars with American names have parts from China in them. Some aren’t assembled here. Also, some Toyotas and Hondas have the most domestic content of cars sold here. Be careful of what you buy.Toyota has only three aluminum casting plants in the world. Two are in Missouri.Don ScarbroughKansas CitySay no to abortionMissouri Rep. Todd Akin apologized for using the wrong terminology when he referred to a “legitimate rape.” However, I immediately assumed he was differentiating between an assault rape and statutory rape.I, too, thought that in an assault rape a woman’s blood pressure, heart rate and other bodily functions went berserk, and probably her reproductive functions went haywire as well.Perhaps we were both misinformed.Regardless of how seldom it may occur, rape can result in pregnancy. As the wise and fabled Dr. Seuss once wrote, “A person’s a person no matter how small.”I would like to add, “A person’s a person no matter how it came to be.”The greatest at-risk group if President Barack Obama is re-elected is the unborn. In his speech to Planned Parenthood, Obama pledged to remove restrictions to abortion.Has our nation sunk this low?D’Ann DreilingBeltonAbandon rudenessI’m opining about the rude and intolerant people who come to the Lee’s Summit Department of Motor Vehicle office.Remember, for 30 years now you must have insurance papers, title or bill of sale, tax receipt and inspection. Without these, you cannot be processed. It’s the law.It hasn’t changed one iota for ions. So please refrain from your threats, cursing, ranting, raving and throwing pens and paper at the employees. They are just doing their jobs keeping you legal. If you feel the need to yell, cuss and scream at someone, go home, look in the mirror and have at it.Please spare the public your outbursts. This is from a father of one of the many young ladies you grown men and women want to waylay and spew out your vile filth at.Thank you, ladies at the DMV, for jobs well done in spite of rude people who come in there. Remember, ladies behind the counter, you are helping those people avoid getting pulled over by the police for invalid registration.Get it, John Q. Public?Terry OwensbyLee’s Summit
