NEW YORK – Mitt Romney and the Republican Party raised $ 170.5 million in September, a record monthly haul for his campaign but one that still trailed the $ 181 million President Obama and the Democratic Party raised over the same period.
Romney, in conjunction with the RNC, had $ 191.2 million left in their accounts at the start of October. Obama’s campaign has not announced a comparable figure. Both campaigns have to file quarterly reports today.
â€Å"Americans can’t afford four more years like the last four,†Spencer Zwick, the national finance chairman for Romney’s campaign, said in a statement. â€Å"With less than one month left, we will continue the hard work of raising the resources to ensure that Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan can win in November and bring real change to the American people.â€Â
It is unclear what the split was between Romney and the RNC, an important distinction because Romney has more control over the funds that go into his account alone. But his fundraising haul is impressive, in part because it came during a stretch in the race where his campaign was struggling and donors were grumbling.
Romney had several stumbles, and his campaign quickly scheduled conference calls to assure skittish donors that things were getting back on track.
The news came as Romney’s top donors began arriving at the Waldorf Astoria here for a â€Å"Romney Victory Fall Retreat.†The event is scheduled to kick off Monday night in an opening gala at the Intrepid Museum, where featured guests included vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and entertainment and business mogul Donald Trump.
The three-day retreat, which the Globe reported on Friday, also includes three different sessions on Tuesday morning, with briefings from Romney advisers on campaign strategy and fundraising. In the evening, donors are gathering for a debate watch party with comedian Dennis Miller as the special guest.
