HARRISONBURG, Va.â"Republican Mitt Romney repudiated his assessment of the 47% of Americans he once deemed too dependent on government, saying Thursday that his remarks were "just completely wrong."
Mr. Romney previously stood by the substance of what he had said at a Florida fundraiser while adding the caveat that his comments hadn't been "elegantly stated." But in an interview with Fox News, the Republican presidential candidate offered a different answer.
"Well, clearly in a campaign with hundreds, if not thousands of speeches and question-and-answer sessions, now and then you're going to say something that doesn't come out right," Mr. Romney said. "In this case, I said something that's just completely wrong."
He added that his life has shown that he cares about 100% of Americans.
Mr. Romney's campaign had been forced to play defense after a videotape of his remarks about the "47%" surfaced last month. The recording showed the former Massachusetts governor telling donors that nearly half of Americans don't pay income taxes, view themselves as victims and can't be persuaded to take responsibility for their lives.
Democrats were quick to point out that many of the people Mr. Romney described are veterans, senior citizens and lower-income families. The controversial comments dominated the campaign discussion in the days after they emerged, at least temporarily hindering the Romney team's efforts to reset and focus more on the specifics of policy proposals.
Mr. Romney then began saying on the campaign trail that he cares about "the 100%" of America. And in a TV ad, Mr. Romney spoke about compassion, saying that it should be measured by how many Americans are able to find jobs that pay well, not how many are on welfare.
Because Mr. Romney has faced a barrage of questions about the 47% comments, many in both parties were surprised that no mention was made of the issue during Wednesday's presidential debate. In Thursday's Fox News interview, program host Sean Hannity asked the Republican candidate how he would have responded if the question had been posed.
Mr. Romney looked to move past the 47% issue, saying, "This whole campaign is about the 100%.''

IF this book is online free it is there illegally and I most certainly would not provide you with a link to a site that pirates copyrighted work. I can't find a legal copy of an ebook so it looks as if you will have to buy a paper copy or borrow one from a library
