Border Patrol officials have identified the agent shot and killed Tuesday during a patrol south of Tucson as Nicholas Ivie, an almost five-year veteran of the agency.
Ivie, 30, was killed after he and two other agents responded to an unusual sensor reading near Highway 80 about 7 miles east of Bisbee, Border Patrol officials said in a statement.
âTucson Sector mourns the loss of one of our own. It stands as a reminder of the dangers that agents of [Customs and Border Protection] face every day. We appreciate our state, local, federal and international partners for their support and commitment in seeking justice in this tragedy,â said Acting Chief Patrol Agent Manuel Padilla.
Another Border Patrol agent was also shot; he was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition Tuesday afternoon with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the statement.
âFirst and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with Agent Ivieâs family during this terrible time,â said Border Patrol Joint Field Commander Jeffrey D. Self. âThis is a tragic loss for Customs and Border Protection. We have an unwavering commitment to pursue and bring the perpetrators of this heinous act to justice.â
Ivie was a native of Provo, Utah, and joined Border Patrol in January 2008, according to the statement. A Facebook page that appears to belong to Ivie shows a man with a woman and two small children.
The FBI and Cochise County Sheriff's Office were still investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
Ivie was patrolling the area with a pair of agents after being alerted that a sensor had been tripped, according to Cochise County Sheriff's Commander Marc Denney.Denney told the Los Angeles Times that agents were ambushed. The agents radioed that they had come under fire, he said, attacked by three or four people who appear to have fled on foot into the rocky hills.
It was not clear whether the agents returned fire, and Border Patrol spokesmen declined to provide more details about the shooting.
By the time deputies responded, the gunmen had disappeared, Denney said.
"Whether they were picked up in another vehicle is unknown,â Denney said, adding that the gunmen had ample time to flee and hide. âThey had a bit of a jump on us.â
Denney said the motive for the shooting was still "highly unknown."
âWeâve worked that area pretty significantly over the years,â he said of the shooting site, a known smuggling area for both drugs and, to a lesser extent, people.
âYou never know what youâre going to run across out there,â Denney said. âItâs a very rough area â" itâs mountainous, rocky, loose rock, low vegetation. Itâs hard terrain to maneuver around. Thereâs not a lot of trail systems in place. Youâre just trying to work your way around and not turn an ankle.â
Grim, familiar news to Border Patrol
The last Border Patrol agent fatally shot on duty was Brian Terry, 40, who died in a shootout near the Arizona border town of Rio Rico in December 2010. The Border Patrol station in Naco, Ariz. -- where the agents shot Tuesday were stationed -- was recently named after Terry.
Terry's family released a statement to The Times on Tuesday calling the latest shooting "a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by the brave men and women who patrol our borders and keep our nation safe. It is also a graphic reminder of the inherent dangers that threaten the safety of those who live and work near the border."
Two guns used in Terry's shooting were later linked to the government's Fast and Furious gun-smuggling operation, and some members of Congress were already questioning Tuesday whether this latest shooting might be linked as well.
âIâm sure that, if there is any kind of connection, that will come out,â Denney said, noting that any firearms recovered from the scene would be traced and any possible Fast and Furious connections investigated.
Question by Jack Braning: What will happen to the Christian faith once "Judgment Day" passes without incident? With the supposed "Judgment Day" approaching on Saturday, I am wandering one thing. When it comes and goes and nothing happens, what will Christians all around the world do? How will this effect their faith? Will if even effect it, or make them rethink anything? I for one know "Judgment Day" is bs since, well, the same people also said we are gonna die in 2012. Lol. So, how will this one day effect the believe over all. Best answer for What will happen to the Christian faith once "Judgment Day" passes without incident?:

It's only a minority of christians who believe in this end of the world on Saturday stuff. The rest of us are perfectly aware that we cannot possible know the date of the end, as Jesus tells us so in the Bible. I'm sure the minority will be very disappointed.
Answer by Challenge Accepted
Doomsday predictor: Whoops lol, I made a miscalculation, it's actually this date! It won't shamble religion, sadly. Perhaps ruining few people's lives.
Answer by Iwalkeverywhere
They will pick a new date.
Answer by ~Unicorns are fluffy~
Seeing as how no one, including Jesus knows when the Rapture is going to take place I'm pretty sure 99.9% of Christians will br just as secure in their faith as they were before.

The things that Camping bases his assumptions.... are not in scripture.....so real Christians will continue to look at the Bible. Where are the Two-Witnesses of Revelation Ch. 11? http://niv.scripturetext.com/revelation/11.htm They are meant to Prophesy 1260 days with the whole world aware they are here.
Answer by Jay
You do realize that a VAST majority of Christians DO NOT believe that the 21st is the day of the rapture?? Harold Camping and his small group of followers are the ONLY ones who believe this. As a christian, when the 21st passes w/out incident it will only strengthen my faith in the Lord!
Answer by Nightwind: Mwa ha ha!
Christianity does not say Judgment Day will be May 21. Harold Camping said that. Since when does a single religious broadcaster speak for an entire religion?
Answer by Penguin
The Christian faith will still be here because not everyone who is Christians believes in May 21 2011.
Answer by Sarah Wise
Not a lot is happening in the church now, so not a lot will happen tomorrow, or the next day either.
Answer by Twilight the LSA Queen
I do not believe this hoax will affect every single Christian, but only the ones that believed it would happen. Heard that some people have quit their jobs, sold their homes and plan on spending all of their life savings come May 21st. They will be literally screwed.

It wont change anything because the bible doesn't say it will end on Saturday. So the ones that believed it will just find some excuse for why it was miscalculated and believe the next prediction. There are plenty of sane down to earth Christians who never believed it was this Saturday. It's just that places like Y!A attract the crackpots who jump at any excuse to predict judgement day or quote something obscure from the bible (most of them from the bible belt of America). I have to keep reminding myself that they aren't -all- like the ones we see on Y!A.
