Thirteen children were hurt in Victorville on Thursday when a U-Haul truck collided with a school bus carrying 40 students and knocked it on its side, authorities reported.

Tracey Martinez, a San Bernardino County Fire Department spokeswoman, said two children were seriously injured and taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center. She described their injuries as "non-life threatening."

The bus driver also was hurt, Martinez added. He and the 11 other injured students were taken to local hospitals.

The children were riding home on the bus from the Galileo Academy in Victorville around 2 p.m. when the accident occurred. The two people in the U-Haul truck were uninjured.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the truck was backing out of a driveway as the school bus approached. The bus driver tried to swerve, but the truck struck the rear part of the bus and sent it spinning, authorities said.

CHP officers said one of the two seriously injured children suffered a head injury; the other a leg injury, possibly a broken bone.

The crash is under investigation, Martinez said.
