As of this writing, three supes â€" Christina Olague, David Campos and John Avalos â€" voted against the City Ethics Commission 4-1 vote to remove Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi .
Deputy City Attorney Sherri Kaiser made a mistake tonight when she told the Board of Supervisors that the the board should vote to remove Mirkarimi because Mayor Ed Lee’s interepretation of the City Charter was more “nimble†than the voter’s right to recall elected officials.
As Supervisor Campos said Tuesday night, “I don’t know the difference between nimble and vague.†That fact is, Still Ed Lee asked the supes to help him remove another democratically-elected official not based on a definitive standard, but on a “case by case†basis.
This must have been a difficult decision for all the supervisors. Board President David Chiu struck the right tone as he oversaw hours of testimony from passionate citizens. Anti-domestic violence advocates were righteous in their contention that the city could not allow a man who pleaded guilty to a count of domestic violence to head the sheriff’s department. I was impressed with their courage and conviction. I must agree with Supe Jane Kim’s contention that Mirkarimi supporters should have been more repsectful of these advocates.
